.Mazel - unavailable

Mazel has survived until help arrived!

UPDATE #5:  A long awaited Mazel Update!
It’s been almost two weeks since Mazel was discharged, and we are so happy to share that she is doing remarkably well!
She is starting to get some pep back in her step and showing more energy every day. She’s been eating four small meals a day of prescription canned food and is learning how to use her new Bailey Chair — generously donated by the wonderful folks at Bailey Chairs 4 Dogs- THANK YOU!

We would also like to thank a former PWD Adopter, Michelle for making contact with Bailey Chairs 4 Dogs and for paying the shipping.
Drum roll please———->Mazel now weighs 8.2 pounds! That’s a huge milestone for her, and we couldn’t be more proud of her progress.
She’ll be heading back to Internal Medicine for a follow-up, and we’ll keep everyone posted on how that goes.

Thank you SO much to everyone who has donated, shared her story, and sent love her way. Mazel is truly one of the kindest, most loving dogs — it’s still heartbreaking to think of what she went through, but your support is helping to rewrite her story.

INTRO:  We received an urgent-911 call from a local shelter — the voice on the other end was desperate: “Please, come see her now. She is scheduled to be euthanized today."
We dropped everything and went straight to the shelter… then rushed her straight to the Emergency Vet Hospital.
We named her Mazel, a name that means luck — because somehow, she survived long enough for help to arrive.

Mazel's young body had been ravaged by starvation. At just 6.8 pounds, she weighed less than a third of what she should. Her ideal weight is 20–25 pounds. She has no muscle left. Her body was cold, weak, and skeletal — so depleted that she can barely lift her head, let alone stand. We did get a tail wag, a sign of hope.

The only history we have is that she was found lying alone under a tree on Monday afternoon. We don’t know how long she’s been without food, how long she’s been suffering, but her condition tells us it’s been a long, brutal road. She is now in the ICU, receiving round-the-clock care. Her condition is critical, prognosis is guarded and her recovery will be long. But we believe in her, and we hope you do too.

UPDATE DAY 1!  Mazel is still in the ICU, but we’re holding onto hope — the past two days have brought some signs of improvement. She has gained a little weight, which is a small but meaningful step forward.
Last night, she received a much-needed blood transfusion due to extremely low red blood cell levels. She was also severely matted, so the team did their best grooming her — now that she’s been shaved, we can see just how emaciated she truly is.
This afternoon, she will be evaluated by the Neurologist. She’s still unable to stand but the specialists remain hopeful that this is all due to her severe emaciation, anemia and neglected state. We and the caring ER vet staff are continuing to fight for her.

UPDATE DAY 2-3! Our Neurologist examined Mazel, and we were overwhelmed with emotion and joy as she took her first steps in probably months! The Neurologist is optimistic — with proper hydration and nutrition, Mazel is expected to regain her full strength and walk again. This is great news!
It’s heartbreaking to think she went so long without food, leading to such a critical condition. But we truly believe she is now on the right path, surrounded by love, care, and respect.
She remains in ICU (day 3), and we’re patiently waiting to see if her red blood cell levels remain stable, after receiving 2 blood transfusions.
A huge thank you to the donor dog who provides life-saving blood to the hospital — the unseen heroes who make recovery possible.

UPDATE DAY 4!  We wanted to share a quick update on our sweet Mazel. Unfortunately, she faced a set back last night. She began coughing, and after a thorough evaluation by the critical care specialist, an X-ray revealed a concerning spot on her lungs. She is now being treated for pneumonia.
This is yet another hurdle in her long journey, but her medical team is acting swiftly and doing everything possible to support her recovery. Mazel continues to show incredible strength, and we remain hopeful as she fights through this next challenge.
Her hospital bill is quickly approaching $10,000.
Given how terribly neglected she was before coming into care, we’re sadly not surprised by how much it will take to get her better. But her life is worth saving. Humans failed her before— so it will take compassionate, committed humans to get her out of this.
Thank you all for your continued love and support Mazel, this means the world to us—and to Mazel.

On-going updates will be posted on our Facebook Page
